Dear HCR Fresher*,

Congratulations on your acceptance to Brasenose College! We are delighted to welcome you to Oxford and as a new member of the Hulme Common Room (HCR), the graduate community at Brasenose College. The HCR Committee, a group of fellow graduate students elected by the common room, is here to help you settle into life at Brasenose, providing help and advice where possible. The Committee also organises and hosts numerous events throughout the year to create a social hub for graduates at our college whether cocktail parties, arts events, karaoke nights, bagel brunches, afternoon teas or yoga. Our term card can be found here.

We understand that you are beginning your time at Brasenose under very unusual circumstances and that HCR life will be different from before, at least for the foreseeable future. As such, we want to reassure you that there will still be ample opportunity to get to know your fellow students and appreciate everything the ‘city of dreaming spires’ has to offer. It is a time of adjustment for us all in the common room, but we hope you will still feel just as much a part of the vibrant community that is the HCR. We are known to be the friendliest college after all!

You will find up-to-date information regarding your arrival and first few days at Brasenose on the official College Freshers website and via the Fresher's Portal (click below), as well as our term cards for Freshers’ Week and beyond. We also have a Facebook Group dedicated to 2020 HCR Freshers where you can ask questions and connect with the HCR Committee and fellow Freshers. More updates will be posted on the page closer to when you arrive, but we will also reach out via email for important updates. Be sure to check out the 2020 Fresher's Guide here.

Please feel free to send an e-mail to Aneyn (hcr-freshers@bnc.ox.ac.uk) or myself (hcr-president@bnc.ox.ac.uk) should you have any questions or concerns. You will also be assigned a College Parent (another HCR member) and a family with other Freshers to have as a point of contact.

Freshers’ events begin on September 28th and you will receive more information via e-mail closer to the time. The number of attendees will be limited for all in-person events to make sure we adhere to social distancing rules and keep everyone safe; we will be operating a booking system for such events and will update you in due course. All social events are free for Freshers to attend (whether virtual or in-person) and you may attend as many as you wish. A few events will be compulsory, and you will receive more information about those soon. There will be an informal online Fresher's Q & A event on Wednesday September 16th at 2PM BST to meet Aneyn and talk through what Fresher's week will look like. A link to the Microsoft Teams event will be shared shortly before via email and on Facebook.

We hope you are excited to join Brasenose and we look forward to meeting you in Michaelmas!

Warm regards,

Jennifer Herrmann, HCR President

Aneyn O’Grady, HCR Fresher’s Representative
